Start a focus session

Set up your phone's own Focus mode or app limits first (see the Blocking tab), so the apps that pull you in stay quiet.

Your unlock card

Ending a session early takes a code you keep away from your phone. Write it on a sticky note or print it and put it on the fridge. The walk over is the point: by the time you get there, the urge has usually passed.

Block apps with your phone's own tools

A web app can't lock other apps, but your phone can, for free. Set it up once.

iPhone
  1. Open Settings → Focus and tap + to make a new Focus (or use Do Not Disturb).
  2. Under Apps, allow only what you need, like Phone and Messages from favorites.
  3. For a harder lock, go to Settings → Screen Time → App Limits and set a daily limit on your most distracting apps.
  4. Swipe down from the top-right corner and turn on your Focus when you start a session here.
Android
  1. Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. (Names vary a little by phone; search Settings for “Focus” or “Digital Wellbeing”.)
  2. Tap Focus mode and pick the apps that distract you.
  3. Tap Turn on now when you start a session here. Paused apps stay paused until you turn it off.

Why bother? Every switch costs your brain time to get back on track. More on deep work.
